ChevronTexaco, the second largest oil company in the US, has awarded a 10-year "preferred supplier" contract to the world's leading catering group, UK-based Compass.

Local supplies will be used whenever possible
The $2bn (1.4bn) deal is believed to be the largest catering contract ever, Compass said.

"This historic agreement reinforces our confidence in the group's ability to meet our stated sales growth target of six percent to nine percent for the current year."

Under the agreement, Compass will supply catering and facilities management for ChevronTexaco's facilities in 180 countries.

Giant operation

With 53,000 mouths to feed at the company's oil platforms, refineries and offices, Compass will be busy.

The company said it plans to use local supplies to cater for ChevronTexaco's workers.

ChevronTexaco said reducing the number of suppliers it uses will generate savings of $20m a year.

In London, Compass shares were marked 5p higher at 493p in early trade on Monday.
