The speech is one of the most important in the Treasury calendar

Long term funding of the NHS will be one of the key areas addressed by the Chancellor
Gordon Brown announced an extra 1bn for the National Health Service and he underlined the government's belief that the NHS should remain free at the point of delivery. He also made a series of guarantees about pensioners' incomes. There were also measures to encourage business investment, inner city regeneration and training for the long term unemployed.
