BBC Weatherman Philip Avery was born in Dunfermline, Scotland.
After taking an Honours degree course in Politics and Economics at Keele University, he joined the Royal Navy in February 1984.
On completing his training as a Meteorologist and Oceanographer, Philip served at a variety of Royal Naval Air Stations across the UK.
He has travelled much of the world as a forecaster and saw service in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Gulf War as a member of a helicopter squadron based aboard HMS Ark Royal.
Philip left the Royal Navy in 1994 and studied for a Masters degree in Business Administration at Strathclyde Graduate Business School, visiting Vietnam to undertake some consultancy work in the process.
His broadcasting career began with the launch of The Weather Network in Birmingham in 1996. Within a few months Philip moved to London to work on The Weather Channel.
He joined the BBC Weather Centre in April 1998, working mainly on BBC World. He now broadcasts across all the BBC's domestic channels.
Philip is keen on most sports, especially football, rugby, cricket and horse racing. He also takes a particular interest in the Stock Market and current affairs. He is single and although currently resident in London, spends time in Devon and Ayrshire.
