Taiwan plays cyber war games
Taiwan vs China in a cyber warfare

Taiwan is to include drills in cyber warfare in its largest annual military exercises later this month, according to a defence ministry official.

The step is an effort to strengthen its defences against a possible computer virus attack from mainland China.

A Taiwanese military spokesman said "red" (communist Chinese) and "blue" (Taiwanese) combat forces would use nearly 2,000 computer viruses to attack each other's information networks during the Han Glory war games.

Taiwan's economy relies heavily on computers and a successful cyber attack could cause serious damage on the island.

Chief of the Taiwan General Staff Tang Yao-ming has warned that China might launch an "information war," including the use of computer viruses to paralyse military command, energy, transportation and banking systems, before an invasion of the island.

The protection tactics developed against cyber virus includes a large list of computer bugs, including those from the ILOVEYOU family which swept the world a few months ago.

Taiwanese media have previously said the China's People's Liberation Army had simulated computer virus offensives in exercises in Shenyang, Beijing, and Nanjing over the past two years.
