New Zealand's Prime Minister has been forced to apologise after making a joke at the expense of one of the country's indigenous Maori tribes.

John Key's relationship with the Tuhoe was already strained before he joked about cannibalism while addressing a tourism conference.

Tuhoe spokesman Tamati Kruger said they were taking it very seriously.

Jonathan Josephs reports.

Correction 15 May 2010: An earlier version of this report incorrectly captioned Tamati Kruger as Te Ururoa Flavell
