Cold winter prompts Mongolia 'disaster' warning

In Mongolia what aid agencies are calling a slowly unfolding disaster is taking hold, as extreme cold and snow continues to devastate the country's nomadic herder communities.

So far about 10 per cent of the country's livestock has perished, 4.5m in total.

The worst affected part of the country is an area called Uvurkhangai, where almost one million animals have died.

The BBC's Chris Hogg reports from a small local hospital in a herder community.
