Beijing has said President Obama's decision to meet Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama seriously undermines relations between the US and China.

It released a strongly worded statement in response to the meeting, having earlier expressed "strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition".

"The behaviour of the US... seriously interferes in China's internal politics and seriously hurts the national feelings of the Chinese people", the ministry statement said.

Quentin Sommerville reports from Beijing.
