World reaction: Corazon Aquino dies

Tributes have been paid to the Philippines' much-admired former President, Corazon Aquino, who died at the age of 76.

PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT GLORIA ARROYO

"Cory Aquino helped lead a revolution that restored democracy and the rule of law to our nation at a time of great peril. Our nation will mourn her passing. History was thrust upon her when her noble husband was cut down in the prime of his life, as he fought for democracy and the rule of law. She picked up the standard from the fallen warrior Ninoy and helped lead our nation to a brighter day."

US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA'S OFFICE

"Her courage, determination, and moral leadership are an inspiration to us all and exemplify the best in the Filipino nation. On behalf of the American people, the president extends his deepest condolences to the Aquino family and the nation of the Philippines."

US SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON

"Cory Aquino was beloved by her nation and admired by the world for her extraordinary courage after the assassination of her husband, and later, during her service as president. She helped bring democracy back to the Philippines after many years of authoritarian rule with a faith in her country and its people that never wavered."
