The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, has urged Burma's military authorities to free the jailed opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr Ban met Burma's military leader, Than Shwe, and is also seeking the release of more than 2,000 political prisoners ahead of elections promised by the ruling generals next year.

Laura Trevelyan reports.
