Asia forest fire calamity warning

The Environment Minister of Brunei, Ismail Damit, has described the forest fires raging in south-east Asia as an environmental calamity, and has said the countries of the region should act immediately.

Opening a special ASEAN ministerial conference in Brunei, Mr Ismail warned that the region's common heritage could be jeopardised by further delay.

He said the meeting should consider seeking outside help.

He also suggested cloud-seeding to induce rain.

Conference sources say the ministers have decided to do nothing about the fires burning out of control in eastern Borneo, but to concentrate their efforts instead on other parts of the region.
