In pictures: Usu's fiery outburst
Mount Usu has gone into full eruption on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, hurling out huge quantities of ash and sending a massive plume of smoke into the atmosphere.

The eruption began a day after the authorities completed the evacuation of thousands of people following a sudden increase in volcanic activity.
