Women sentenced to death by stoning

A court in the United Arab Emirates has sentenced an Indonesian woman to death by stoning after she was convicted of adultery.

Reports say the woman worked as a housemaid and had an affair with an Indian expatriate, who has fled the country.

A BBC correspondent in Dubai says the sentence of stoning is extremely rare in the UAE: executions under Islamic Sharia law are usually carried out by firing squad out of public view.

The Indonesian embassy says it is hiring a lawyer to appeal against the sentence.
