Indonesian train crash kills five

At least five people have died in Indonesia after a train carriage fell from a bridge into a dry river bed.

Police said more than 100 other people were injured in the accident, which happened near the town of Purwokerto in central Java.

The train was travelling from the city of Solo to the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

Train accidents are common in Indonesia which has an old rail network and trains that are frequently overcrowded.

"Survivors said the train was very crowded and it stopped before one of the carriages derailed and toppled over," police official Darkoni told Reuters news agency.

At least 13 people were killed when two trains collided in Java in April 2006.
