Australian police patrolled Dili's airport after Wednesday's shooting

At least two people have been killed in continuing violence in the capital of East Timor, Dili, UN police say.

The bodies of two men were found by UN police on Friday morning and taken to Dili's National Hospital.

It is unclear when the men died but it is believed they were killed late on Thursday or early on Friday, a hospital official told Associated Press news.

Two people were shot dead in fighting near East Timor airport on Wednesday. The airport was temporarily closed.

East Timor has seen a week of violence since a UN report into factional fighting earlier in the year was published on Sunday.

The report said that the government of ex-Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri was largely responsible for the two months of unrest that left more than 30 people dead earlier this year.

Violence followed Mr Alkatiri's decision to sack disgruntled soldiers in March.

International peacekeepers had to be brought in to restore order after fighting broke out between rebel soldiers and those loyal to the government.

Mr Alkatiri was forced to resign in June under domestic and international pressure.

The UN report also accuses Mr Alkatiri of arming a civilian hit squad with orders to kill his political opponents.

Mr Alkatiri strongly denies the accusation.
