Japanese lawmaker commits suicide over financial scandal

A Japanese politician, Shokei Arai, who was being investigated in connection with a continuing corruption scandal has committed suicide.

He was a former finance ministry official and legislator for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, and was facing arrest on suspicion of having taken a bribe from a brokerage firm, Nikko securities.

Mr Arai died after hanging himself in a Tokyo hotel room.
