The Indonesian military say that Interfet troops fired on a border post after mistakenly identifying it as a position held by pro-Indonesian militiamen.

In its version of events, Interfet said an Australian platoon returned fire after being shot at, near the border town of Motaain

It marks the third time in a week that Australian troops have been fired upon - two soldiers were wounded last Monday.

Australian Major David Kilkullen (centre) says the platoon were following Indonesian maps which indicated they were still in East Timor.

But the map used by Indonesian troops was based on Dutch charts dating from the 1930's - they say the Australians had crossed the border.
