At least 10 people have been killed and more than 115 others injured when a train plunged into a deep ravine in the Philippines, officials say.

They said the accident happened near the town of Padre Burgos, about 340km (210 miles) south-east of Manila.

Some of the estimated 400 passengers were pulled from the wreckage as rescuers searched for others trapped.

The eight-coach Philippine National Railways train was travelling overnight from Naga City to Manila.

The train jumped off the rails and five of the eight coaches fell down the 12-metre (40-foot) ravine, inspector Roger Fuentes DZBB radio from the scene of the crash.

Rescue operation

"It was all very quick. I felt like we were being pulled over," Melquiades del Pillar, a conductor on the train, told a radio station.

"There are many casualties and some of them are unconscious," a surviving passenger told the radio.

Rescuers cut through the sides of the overturned coaches to carry out the passengers using improvised stretchers, AFP news agency reports.

The dead include a one-year-old child.

Police said it was too early to pinpoint the cause of the crash, but noted that some people in the area had been arrested for stealing and selling on railway tracks, Reuters quoted them as saying.
