Missing Spanish ferry found safe

A newly built Spanish-owned ferry on its maiden voyage that went missing between Singapore and Sri Lanka with 12 crew on board has re-appeared.

The 500-seat high-speed catamaran "Nixe" was on its way to Spain when it lost radio contact on Sunday evening.

The ship was reported to be having problems with communication equipment.

But the owner was quoted as saying the catamaran and its crew were safe. It is expected to dock in Sri Lanka for repairs before continuing its voyage.

On board are 10 Spaniards and two technicians of unknown nationality who work for the company that built the ship, MarinTeknik.

The ferry, valued at $18m, was owned by Spanish firm Balearia.
