US investigates Cambodia adoption
Phnom Penh's street children

US officials are in Cambodia to study the country's adoption procedures after allegations of improper practices.

Washington halted US adoptions from the country more than two years ago due to what it called concerns about child protection, baby selling and fraud.

The US is not likely to change its position on the basis of this one preliminary visit, officials said.

A woman who helped US actress Angelina Jolie adopt a Cambodian child has been indicted in the US for visa fraud.

Prosecutors allege that American Lynn Devin and her sister Lauryn Galindo bought children from poor families to place for adoption in the US.

Devin has pleaded guilty to falsifying documents in order to bring Cambodian children into the US.

Authorities have not commented specifically on the Jolie adoption, which took place after the introduction of the US ban.

The investigators in Cambodia this week will meet government officials and human rights workers, as well as visiting orphanages.
