Man convicted over Marriott bomb
Marriott Hotel, Jakarta, 5 August 2003
The attack on the Marriott hotel sent shockwaves through the region
An Indonesian man has become the first person convicted for the bomb attack on Jakarta's Marriott hotel last year.

Sardona Siliwangi received a 10-year prison sentence for having stored explosives later used in the bombing, which killed 12 people in August 2003.

The court also found him guilty of hosting meetings of the bombers at his home in the Sumatran town of Bengkulu.

The hotel attack was blamed on Muslim extremists from Jemaah Islamiah - a group suspected of ties to al-Qaeda.

Jemaah Islamiah has also been accused of co-ordinating two deadly bombings in the Indonesian resort of Bali in 2003, which left over 200 people dead.

No emotion

A number of other suspects are in custody awaiting trial for their involvement in the Marriott attack.

But the bomber himself was killed in the explosion and two men - thought to be key associates of his - narrowly escaped arrest in October last year.

The duo, Noordin Mohammad Top and Azahari Husin, both allegedly explosives experts from Malaysia, are also wanted in connection with the Bali bombing.

Siliwangi showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down and told judges he had not yet decided whether to appeal or not.
