Opposition split in Philippines poll
Panfilo Lacson
Panfilo Lacson is a controversial figure
An outspoken senator in the Philippines is to stand in May's presidential elections, threatening to split opposition to President Gloria Arroyo.

Former police chief Panfilo Lacson registered for the LDP party, even though its leaders have backed another man, film star Fernando Poe Junior.

Mr Lacson's tough stance on policing won him the backing of the country's influential Chinese community.

He said he would campaign against crime and corruption.

Mr Lacson is a controversial figure who served under and remained loyal to former President Joseph Estrada, who was ousted in 2001 and is now on trial for economic crimes.

Mr Lacson himself was cleared of charges he ordered the killing of 11 bank robbers in 1995.

He has been a vocal critic of Mrs Arroyo, and has accused her husband of corruption.

Mr Lacson, 54, had been pressured by LDP leaders to stand aside in favour of Fernando Poe Junior, a political newcomer who is doing well in the opinion polls.

It was not clear how the dispute would be resolved, since election officials said each party could only field one candidate.

The election is due on 10 May.
