This prompted the resignation of Chief of Police Tan Sri Rahim Noor, who later admitted in court that he had been personally involved in the beating of the former deputy prime minister. The former police chief said he had become angry and slapped Mr Anwar after the former deputy prime minister had insulted him. He insisted that no-one else had ordered him to beat Mr Anwar, who was blindfolded at the time of the assault. Judgement soon Judgement is expected later this month in Mr Anwar's trial on four counts of corruption. The charges stem from accusations that he used his position as deputy prime minister to cover up allegations of sexual misconduct which had been made against him. A further charge of corruption, and five charges of illegal sexual behaviour, are still pending against Mr Anwar. Since his arrest, Mr Anwar has maintained that the charges against him are part of a conspiracy by his political enemies, including Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed. |
