Anwar assault inquiry presents findings

Mr Anwar appeared in court with a black eye last year

A Malaysian royal commission has concluded its inquiry into the beating of former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim while he was in custody last year.

Malaysia Crisis Section
"The royal commission has completed its report and has submitted it to the king," commission secretary Ismail Hamzah announced on Tuesday.

It is not yet known whether the report will be made public.

A lawyer for Mr Anwar, Karpal Singh, said the public had a right to know the commission's recommendations.

Mr Anwar was visibly bruised when he appeared in court in September.

Police chief resigned

An inquiry by the attorney-general blamed the injuries on police.

This prompted the resignation of Chief of Police Tan Sri Rahim Noor, who later admitted in court that he had been personally involved in the beating of the former deputy prime minister.

The former police chief said he had become angry and slapped Mr Anwar after the former deputy prime minister had insulted him.

He insisted that no-one else had ordered him to beat Mr Anwar, who was blindfolded at the time of the assault.

Judgement soon

Judgement is expected later this month in Mr Anwar's trial on four counts of corruption.

The charges stem from accusations that he used his position as deputy prime minister to cover up allegations of sexual misconduct which had been made against him.

A further charge of corruption, and five charges of illegal sexual behaviour, are still pending against Mr Anwar.

Since his arrest, Mr Anwar has maintained that the charges against him are part of a conspiracy by his political enemies, including Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed.
