The government of Singapore has announced a cabinet reshuffle, creating a new post which for the first time coordinates defence and homeland security.
The Deputy Prime Minister, Tony Tan, steps down as Defence Minister to take on the new portfolio.
Correspondents say bringing in such a high-ranking politician to oversee the department shows that the government is serious about safeguarding Singapore against terrorist threats.
The government has also brought several junior ministers into its upper ranks, in what is being billed as a renewal of Singapore's political leadership, and the way to attract creative talent and investment to the country.
