Wednesday, February 3, 1999 Published at 09:29 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Anwar associate jailed ![]() Supporters say Nalla's conviction is part of a witch-hunt against Mr Anwar An associate of former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has been sentenced to 42 months in jail for illegally possessing bullets.
Mr Anwar is currently being tried on four charges of corruption, which he denies. Mr Nallakaruppan, better known in Malaysia as Nalla, had also been accused of leaking state secrets.
Nalla was arrested on 3 September, one day after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad fired Mr Anwar on the grounds of "immorality". Mr Anwar, who was arrested on 20 September, claims the charges against him and his associate were part of a conspiracy by his political enemies.
