Vietnam burns pornographic material

The authorities in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam have burned thousands of pornographic videos and books as part of an ongoing campaign against what its communist leaders call social evils.

The city's Culture Department stockpiles illegal materials and holds a bonfire every year.

This year more than 200,000 compact discs and 11,000 videos have been burned as well as equipment for gambling, needles and opium.

The aim is to contain trends which are seen as threatening social harmony.
