Friday, January 8, 1999 Published at 22:05 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Five suspected Islamists jailed in Uzbekistan A court in Uzbekistan has imposed jail terms of up to twelve years on five men accused of belonging to a radical Islamic group. The five all denied the charges. They were alleged to be followers of an Uzbek Islamic leader, Abidkhon Nazarov, who's accused of wanting to overturn the government and set up an Islamic state. The trial was one of the last in a series of unprecedented public trials of people accused of crimes linked to radical Islam. Early last year, the authorities launched a big campaign to stamp out what they say is the rise of radical Islam after the killing of several policemen by suspected militants.
