Blast kills Chinese coal miners

An explosion in a coal mine in eastern China has killed at least 32 miners and injured 10 others.

The blast happened on Saturday, but was first reported in an official Chinese newspaper, the Wenhui Daily, on Monday.

Ten miners survived the blast but nine of them are reported to be seriously injured.

Officials at the mine said the explosion - at the Changguang mine in Zhejiang province - was caused by a spark, which ignited coal gas.

They said rescue teams were rushed to the scene, but released no further details of the accident.

The mine is one of several in the area operated by a coal group that has 10,000 miners producing 800,000 tonnes of coal a year.

Accidents are common in China's notoriously dangerous mines. According to official figures, some 2,000 miners died in accidents last year.
