Azerbaijan out of European football

The European football organisation, Uefa, has barred Azerbaijan from entering European competitions next season.

Uefa said the Azerbaijani football federation had ruled itself out because of its failure to complete its own national league fixtures in the season that has just ended.

The league competition broke down after 11 clubs boycotted games in a dispute over who should be in charge of the federation.

They supported a rival candidate to the present chairman, Fuad Musayev, who they accuse of failing to raise the standard of football in Azerbaijan.
