In pictures: Philippines anti-terror war
American and Philippine military forces formally launched joint anti-terrorist exercises with a ceremony at an air base in the southern town of Zamboanga.
 Officially, the role of the US troops is to train Filipino forces
 Helicopter night-flying and other sophisticated skills will be taught
 Manila says its soldiers are battle-hardened but lack adequate weaponry
 The two countries are old allies with strong military ties
 Among US concerns is the fate of an American couple kidnapped by Muslim rebels
 Filipino protesters may have little time for the rebels but oppose the US military presence
