The German engineering and technology group, Siemens, says it has won a $315m contract to supply equipment for the first underground railway in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The contract, signed with the Bangkok Metro Corp, includes supplying trains, signalling and communications equipment, as well as a 10-year maintenance contract.

The subway is expected to open in 2003.
