North Korea fires ballistic missile

Japanese and American military officials are seeking more information about a report that North Korea fired a medium-range ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan.

The Japanese Defence Agency, which runs Japan's self-defence forces, said it was told that the missile landed midway between North Korea and north-west Japan.

The area is also close to the Russian far eastern port of Vladivostok.

Correspondents say the missile is likely to be an updated version of North Korea's Rodong-One missile, one of which was test-fired in the same area in 1993.
