Anti-US protests in Indonesia

Protestors in three Indonesian cities have staged demonstrations against any US military strikes on Afghanistan.

Around 40 students rallied outside the US embassy in Jakarta, while hundreds gathered in the cities of Bandung and Yogyakarta, where it is reported they burned US and Israeli flags.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation.

President Megawati Sukarnoputri has pledged to support Washington, describing the attacks on the US as the worst atrocity ever inflicted in the history of civilisation.

But analysts say there's growing opposition to her stance from Muslim groups.

On Tuesday, the country's highest Islamic authority warned it will call for a jihad, or holy war, if the US stages retaliatory strikes on Afghanistan.
