Japan has marked the 56th anniversary of the day a US aircraft dropped the Little Boy atomic bomb on the unsuspecting city of Hiroshima.
The bomb flattened everything within two kilometres of its epicentre
Every year people mark the anniversary with prayers at the cenotaph
Children offer folded paper cranes as a mark of peace
Peace activists waved lights at the Atomic Bomb Dome
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited A-bomb survivors
In Tokyo, protesters used the occasion to condemn US missile defence
