Venezuela welcomes Jiang

The Chinese President Jiang Zhemin has received a warm welcome in Venezuela, the last leg of his tour of six Latin American countries.

The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has steered the country towards closer ties with China -- part of what correspondents say is a foreign policy strategy of re-aligning away from dominant US influence.

President Chavez praised China, saying it represented what he called the 'self determination of nations.' During his visit, President Jiang is likely to seek Venezuela's support in rebuffing US moves to censure China's human rights record at the Human Rights Commission in Geneva.
