President Jiang tours Latin America

The President of China, Jiang Zemin, has arrived in Chile, the first stop on a twelve-day tour of several Latin American countries.

The tour was scheduled before the current diplomatic crisis between China and the US.

Correspondents say the aim of Mr Jiang's tour is to develop China's influence in the region through increased trade and economic co-operation.

But he's also expected to take the opportunity to lobby for support in resisting a US-backed attempt to condemn China at the annual session of the United Nations Commission of Human Rights. Mr Jiang is also visiting Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela.
