Economic package for Bolivia's rural poor
The Bolivian President, Hugo Banzer, has announced an economic package aimed at helping poor people in the countryside. It includes one-hundred-thousand new jobs, a forty-five million dollar fund for small and medium-sized producers, debt-restructuring, and eliminating a controversial consumption tax. The move comes after a month-long crisis when protests by coca producers, farmers and teachers brought Bolivia to a virtual standstill. At least ten people were killed and dozens more injured in what was considered Bolivia's worst crisis since its return to democracy in 1982 From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
