Economic package for Bolivia's rural poor

The Bolivian President, Hugo Banzer, has announced an economic package aimed at helping poor people in the countryside.

It includes one-hundred-thousand new jobs, a forty-five million dollar fund for small and medium-sized producers, debt-restructuring, and eliminating a controversial consumption tax.

The move comes after a month-long crisis when protests by coca producers, farmers and teachers brought Bolivia to a virtual standstill. At least ten people were killed and dozens more injured in what was considered Bolivia's worst crisis since its return to democracy in 1982
