The British production of "The Chairs" has received six Tony nominations including best actor and actress

A British and Irish invasion of Broadway theatre has been rewarded with more than 20 Tony nominations. A British revival of the musical Cabaret, starring Natasha Richardson, receives ten nominations.

The actress was nominated, as well as director, Sam Mendes, and Scottish actor, Alan Cumming, who is making his Broadway debut.

A scene from
"The Lion King" received a mighty eleven nominations
Six nominations went to the dark Irish comedy, the Beauty Queen of Leenane, written by Martin McDonagh, which has confirmed his position in New York as the standard-bearer for a new young generation of British and Irish playwrights.

A British staging of the absurdist Ionesco drama, the Chairs, also received six nominations. The transatlantic invasion of Broadway shows no signs of abating.

By the end of the month, 13 major British plays or productions will be running in the city. The Tony trophies will be handed out to the winners in a ceremony in New York on June 7.
