Workers on board a ship have begun lowering a concrete and steel containment device over a leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP said the operation to fix the 40ft (12m) funnel in place with submersibles was expected to take two days, with further two days required to connect it to a ship.

Pollution has been streaming from the well, 50 miles (80km) off Louisiana for 18 days, after an explosion destroyed the Deepwater Horizon rig.
