Police seal off part of Times Square

Police in New York have defused an improvised car bomb in Times Square, officials say.

The security alert was triggered when a street vendor saw smoke coming from a Nissan sports utility vehicle.

A police spokesman said they had recovered bomb-making material from the car, including petrol, gas cylinders and electrical wires attached to a timing device.
