A US TV producer has been released from Mexican custody but remains under investigation after his wife was found dead at a resort in Cancun.

Bruce Beresford-Redman, who produced the hit series Survivor, reported his wife, Monica, 42, missing on Monday.

Her body was later discovered in a water tank close to their room at the luxury Moon Palace Golf and Spa Resort.

The couple, who arrived there on 31 March, had been due to return to the US on Thursday.

The cause of Mrs Beresford-Redman's death has yet to be determined.

Veronica Acacio, investigator for Mexico's Quintana Roo state, said Mr Beresford-Redman must stay in the country after being released in the early hours of Saturday, AP news agency reported.

"He won't be able to leave the country until we conclude our investigation into what caused her death," she said.

Earlier, the state's attorney general, Francisco Alor, said Mr Beresford-Redman was being treated as a "person of interest" rather than a suspect.

He said Mrs Beresford-Redman's body had scratches on the neck, signs of asphyxiation and a blow to the right temple.
