US military gay ban should go, says top commander

Gays should be allowed to serve openly in the US military, the country's top commander has said.

Adm Mike Mullen told a Senate hearing into the ban on openly gay personnel that he was "troubled" by the policy which forced people "to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens".
