US envoy opposed to Afghan surge

The United States ambassador in Kabul has written to the White House arguing against sending thousands more American troops to Afghanistan.

In a leaked diplomatic cable, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, a former US commander in Afghanistan, expressed doubts about the competence of the Afghan government led by President Hamid Karzai, and its corruption.
