Jamaica hijacker given 20 years

A man who tried to hijack a Canadian charter jet in Jamaica in April this year has been jailed for 20 years.

Stephen Fray, 21, forced his way on to the Canada-bound plane demanding passage to Cuba.

Fray was overpowered by police after releasing some 170 passengers and following an eight-hour standoff.

Fray was jailed for 83 years on a number of charges but the terms will run concurrently. His lawyer argued Fray was mentally unfit to stand trial.

Fray was jailed by a court in Montego Bay, Jamaica's main tourist resort.

On 19 April he forced his way on to the CanJet plane bearing a .38-caliber revolver.

After the passengers were released the authorities determined that negotiations were not working and police entered the plane to capture Fray.

The aircraft was bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, but was due to stop in Santa Clara in Cuba on the way.

Fray was said to have robbed passengers.
