NY celebrations mark Hudson anniversary

Dutch Royalty met with US dignitaries as they marked the 400th anniversary of explorer, Henry Hudson's historic voyage to New York in 1609.

Hudson's visit spurred a wave of European settlers to make the same voyage across the Atlantic ocean and settle in the Dutch colony, then known as New Amsterdam.

Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife Princess Maxima met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The royal couple watched a flotilla of ships, including a replica of Hudson's ship, the Half Moon, sail along the Hudson river, while a Dutch naval ship blasted a 21-gun salute.

The event marked the start of a week-long celebration in New York.
