Amazon farmer on changing economy

American John Weaver Davis Jr moved to Brazil with his missionary father from Texas in the early 1960s to farm land in the Amazon.

They concentrated on exporting Brazilian hardwood and now less than half of the family's land is still covered by forest.

Mr Davis is now trying to switch cultivation to grow a fibre-rich plant known as curaua.
