UN expresses concern over Haiti election
The United Nations Security Council has urged the government in Haiti to investigate widespread reports of irregularities during the first round of voting in parliamentary elections last month. The Security Council members expressed concern over increasing violence during the electoral process and said they backed the findings of international observers, who said the results had been miscalculated. They also said free and fair elections were crucial to Haiti's development. A second round of voting is to take place on Sunday, but the opposition says the election has been rigged to favour the party of the former president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
