Cuban state television has broadcast video footage of the former president, Fidel Castro, for the first time since June last year.
Mr Castro is seen chatting to a group of Venezuelan students at an event which is said to have taken place on Saturday in Havana.
Earlier, a Cuban newspaper published a picture of Mr Castro meeting the Ecuadorean president, Rafael Correa, on Friday, in which his health appeared to be much improved.
In 2006, Mr Castro handed over power over to his younger brother Raul when he underwent intestinal surgery.
