Is the cowboy way of life under threat? That's the fear for many Texans, who blame the creeping urbanisation of their rural communities.
But the Star Of Texas Fair and Rodeo aims to preserve the tradition of the American West.
Five thousand children who have raised their own steers come to the fair to compete for scholarships, to encourage the young to stay in farming.
There are chuck wagons which recreate the cowboy breakfast beneath the stars - and of course there is plenty of action from the rodeo.
