The United States military has successfully tested their Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missile defence system by shooting down a dummy ballistic missile.
THAAD can be used against short and medium range ballistic missiles in their final stage of flight both inside and outside the atmosphere.
Two interceptors were fired at a target that was fired from a ship in the area. One weapon hit the target while the other was destroyed.
The test comes in the wake of North Korea's notice to global agencies of its plans to launch a satellite in April, which the US and allies see as a disguised missile test.
