When restaurant guide guru Tim Zagat persuaded a group of New York restaurants to stage a series of vintage feasts, some of the city's leading drinks experts were determined not to be left out.

If you have ever wondered what the earliest American cocktails looked and tasted like, here is the answer.

Our New York reporter Matt Wells went along to salute the Saloon Age with the gentlemen of BAR - the Beverage Alcohol Resource company.
